Dealing with crosses is an essential skill for goalkeepers, and sometimes, punching the ball away is the best option to clear danger. To punch the ball with power and accuracy, follow these steps and tips to perfect your technique.
1. Assess the situation
Before deciding to punch the ball, assess the flight of the cross, your position, and the location of opposition players. If you cannot safely catch the ball or if there is significant pressure from opponents, punching can be the better choice.
2. Get in position
As the cross comes in, quickly move into the best position to make contact with the ball. Use small, quick steps to adjust your movement and ensure you’re in the right place. Keep your eye on the ball at all times.
3. Time your jump
Jump towards the ball at the right moment, aiming to meet it at the earliest point you can. This will give you the best chance of reaching the ball before any opposition players. As you jump, use your non-punching arm to protect yourself and maintain balance in the air.
4. Make a strong fist
To punch the ball like a cannon, make a strong fist with your punching hand. Keep your thumb outside your fingers and slightly extended to create a solid surface for striking the ball. Ensure your wrist is straight and stable to avoid injury.
5. Strike the ball
Aim to strike the ball with the knuckles of your first two fingers (index and middle finger), as this area of the fist generates the most power. Focus on making clean contact with the ball. If the ball has top spin, try and punch in the middle of the ball. If it has back spin, try hitting the ball slightly lower than middle.
6. Follow through
After striking the ball, follow through with your punching arm in the direction you want the ball to travel. Try to punch as if your whole body is going through the ball, not just your arm. The more mass you can force through the balls path, the further it will travel. This will help generate even more power and ensure the ball is cleared with purpose.
7. Practice, practice, practice
Finally, practice your punching technique regularly to build confidence, power, and accuracy. Work with a goalkeeper coach to simulate game situations and receive feedback on your technique.
By following these steps and dedicating time to perfecting your punching technique, you can develop the ability to clear crosses like a cannon and keep your goal safe from aerial threats.
